10 Ways to Endure Adversity and Hardship as a Christian

10 Ways to Endure Adversity and Hardship as a Christian

  1. Recognize the Sovereignty of God: Acknowledge that God is in control of every aspect of your life, including your trials and tribulations. Nothing happens by chance; everything is part of His divine plan. Trust in His wisdom and sovereignty, knowing that He has a purpose for your suffering (Eccl 7:13).

  2. Embrace Humility: Humility is essential in enduring hardship. A humble spirit allows you to accept your circumstances without resentment or rebellion. True true humility is achieved by submitting to God's will, recognizing your own unworthiness, and relying entirely on His grace (Ps 10:17). Humility is not merely an outward demeanor but an inward condition of the heart. It involves recognizing our position before God, acknowledging that He is the Creator and Sovereign, while we are His creation, dependent entirely on His mercy and grace. This perspective transforms our approach to life's trials, allowing us to see them through the lens of God’s sovereign will and purpose. It accepts that God's ways are higher than ours and that His plans for us, though sometimes inscrutable, are ultimately for our good and His glory. In times of hardship, this means refraining from questioning His goodness or doubting His wisdom. Instead, we echo the sentiments of Job, who, despite profound suffering, acknowledged, “The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord” (Job 1:21). True humility involves a deep awareness of our own sinfulness and unworthiness before God. This recognition strips away any sense of entitlement we might feel, replacing it with gratitude for God’s mercy. When we understand that we deserve nothing but judgment, every blessing, and even every trial, is seen as a gift from a just and merciful God. This mindset helps us endure adversity without resentment. We realize that our hardships are not punishments, but instruments of God’s refining grace. David’s prayer captures this well: “I am poor and needy, yet the Lord thinks upon me” (Ps 40:17). A humble spirit yields rich fruit in the life of a believer. It brings peace in the midst of trials, as we trust in God’s sovereign control. It fosters patience, as we wait on His timing. It cultivates gratitude, as we recognize His blessings even in adversity. And it strengthens our witness, as others see in us the quiet confidence and joy that come from resting in God’s grace.

  3. Submit to God's Will: Accept that God’s timing and methods are perfect, even when they seem obscure. Patience and submission to God's will are crucial. Understand that every trial has its appointed time, and God will not delay the lifting up of the humble beyond the due time (Hab 2:3).

  4. Seek God's Grace: Pray earnestly for the grace to endure your trials. Paul’s example of praying for relief from his thorn in the flesh teaches us that God’s grace is sufficient for any trial. His strength is made perfect in our weakness, enabling us to bear even the heaviest burdens (2 Cor 12:8-9).

  5. Maintain a Heavenly Perspective: Keep your focus on the eternal glory that awaits you. Our present sufferings are temporary and light compared to the eternal weight of glory that we will receive. This perspective helps to balance the hardships of life and provides hope and encouragement (2 Cor 4:17-18).

  6. Learn from Scripture and Saints: Look to the examples of biblical figures who endured great trials and were eventually lifted up by God. Abraham, Joseph, Job, David, and Paul are all examples of individuals who faced severe hardships but were ultimately blessed. Their stories provide encouragement and teach us the importance of perseverance and faith (Jas 5:11).

  7. Use Christ's Intercession: Rely on Christ’s intercession. Jesus, our High Priest, intercedes on our behalf, ensuring that our prayers are heard and answered. His sympathy with our sufferings and His perfect intercession provide us with comfort and assurance that we will be lifted up in due time (Rom 8:26)..

  8. Endure with Patience and Fortitude: Bear your trials patiently without complaining or becoming disheartened. Boston encourages Christians to exhibit fortitude, understanding that impatience only increases the pain of trials. A steadfast spirit will help you endure until God’s appointed time for relief (Jas 5:7).

  9. Profit from Trials: Seek to gain spiritual benefits from your hardships. Trials are meant to purify and strengthen your faith, leading to spiritual growth. Liken your trials to spiritual medicine that, while unpleasant, brings about healing and growth. Use your adversities to draw closer to God and grow in virtues such as faith, love, and humility (Heb 12:11).

  10. Prepare for Heaven: View your life as a time of preparation for heaven. The trials and humbling circumstances you face are God’s way of fitting you for eternal glory. Embrace your hardships as opportunities to be refined and made ready for the inheritance that awaits you with the saints in light (Col 1:12).

By adhering to these principles, Christians can endure adversity and hardship with a spirit of humility, patience, and faith, ultimately leading to a deeper relationship with God and preparation for eternal glory .
