OR The Sayings of Jesus Exegetically Expounded and Classified.

The Doctrine of the Atonement, As Taught by Christ Himself deals with nearly every passage in the Gospels referring to the death of Christ. In this volume Smeaton examines parallel Bible texts in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, as well as passages in which Christ personally explains the nature, scope, and result of his death on behalf of mankind. The author presents Jesus' explanations of his death and resurrection as proof that God indeed forgives those sinners who trust in Him. His death as a substitution for the resolution of their personal sin is shown to be God's guarantee of redemption. Smeaton describes in depth these Gospel accounts in which Jesus offered insight into the divine view of the cross.
Smeaton's work on the atonement could almost serve as a commentary on the various passages he deals with. He provides most extensive surveys of the biblical evidence available and thoroughly explores them with a view to establishing their meaning, with expert reference to the original languages, and in their contribution to, and connection with, the overall gospel scheme, as that is understood in the rich federal theology which he and his colleagues were so steeped in.)
In these pages I have examined, according to the rules of exact interpretation, what Jesus taught on the subject of the atonement, and have given a classification of His sayings and an outline of the doctrine. This seems to be urgently demanded in our times. The necessity of correctly ascertaining, by the only means within our reach, what the Lord actually taught on this point, cannot be overstated, when we direct any measure of attention to modern thought, and to the conflicting views, often as ill-digested by their propounders as perplexing to the minds of others, which are at present given forth on the nature, design, and effect of the Lord's death.
